And they still sent my kids personal videos thanking them for watching their videos.
As in I got this in a text, not a "download now from [obscure] website" link. Read to the end to see even more of this goodness.
Daniel LaBelle is a funny man, purveyor of laughter, exposer of opportunity, miner of potential, and not-weird Christian athlete who I think everyone should follow and watch. (This is my bio for him, probably not what he'd say.)
I'm a fan pretty much for life now. One, because they addressed my kids, not me. Two, they used their names. Three, they got their names right (my son's name, Stellen, sometimes gets confused.) Four, they're busy and important (legitimately, I mean, actual influencers with demands on their time and energy) and made time and put out effort to do what they have literally no need to do.
What these guys, among others, have mastered is an influence principle we could all learn to leverage.
Do for one
what you wish you could
do for all.
We're all busy in our own way. We have our own preferences and priorities. Yet we all seemingly want some expression of the same things: 1) We want to be needed and 2) be known.
Those innate desires war with the preferences and priorities that tell us if we can't do it all then don't do anything at all.
But it doesn't take much to see how this principle can change the game for you!
Here I am sending an email to thousands of people, playing the role of an unpaid ambassador of these already-influential guys, advertising for your to follow them, and all they did was send 20 second videos to two strangers under the age of 12 three states away.
Their 20-second investment between sandwich bites just provided free social clout and valuable, potent, personal advertising.
I know - we all know - they can't do this for every fan. Or perhaps they've done this with all 59M subscribers and my kids aren't special. Doesn't matter, they feel special and will respond accordingly from now on.
They'll continue telling their friends about it. Their dad (me) will email you people on 5 continents, many of whom will now know and start following these guys. My wife posted about this on social media. And we'll watch, like, and share all of their videos moving forward.
What advertising method in the last 6 weeks - nay, 6 years! - have you done the produced that kind of fruit and such an insanely low investment point?
Individuals
-
Can hold doors for and smile at strangers.
-
Can proactively meet the barista with a non-generic greeting, beating them to the engagement.
-
Can increase your own social media following by shouting out someone who adds value to you.
Leaders
- Can give access to an employee who otherwise wouldn't be in your typical flow of meetings and engagements.
- Can celebrate a team member publicly who added value to you and your organization.
- Can financially bless a team member with a gift card or bonus of any amount simply for consistently reinforcing a core value of your organization.
Don't overthink this. Some are already arguing "Well my team will get jealous" or "Then people will start to expect..." or "It's different with my team."
All great lines to prove you're the lid to your own influence. Keep it up to keep your potential down.
P.S. A while back we also got a personal video from Walker Hayes. It was to our family and again, specifically addressed my kids. He had his entire family shout us out on the video from his living room, wished us well and hoped we'd see him in an upcoming concert.
I'm not diminishing your place in this world or making light of your priorities. Nor am I elevating these guys to the pinnacle of connection or influence. I'm merely pointing out that literally anyone can make the world a better place by doing for one what they wish they could do for all.
