Moving more means moving longer.

This email isn't just about a metaphor but practical direction.
It's not for the "old" people but every person.

Have you seen The Flash? Or maybe a movie or an old show about someone who can move so fast that everyone else seems to be standing still?

That's a picture of a real phenomenon, although someone can't move that fast and we definitely wouldn't have an entire camera crew producing a shot like that. Ha!

For clarity and simplicity, the generalized rule is this: The closer you get the speed of light, the more time slows down for you.

Even when you're running down the street, you're closer to the speed of light than your neighbor on the couch.

I know that seems crazy. And many of you may have just rolled your eyes. The principle in play is what's important though.

Movement keeps your younger and therefore makes you more productive over time.
Work isn't something to graduate from, it's something you always leverage in order to graduate to what's next: more and better work.

If this bugs you, your definition of work is off... way off! You're probably thinking of your crappy job or crappy boss or mindless tasks or pointless end game. But work - the activity of producing, creating, winning, and even worshipping - is a privilege. Let me detour into the privilege real quick...

  1. God created Adam.
  2. Then put him in the garden "TO work it"... (Genesis 2:15).
  3. Then God said it's not good for man to be alone. So God thought up woman.
  4. Between thinking of women (Gen 2:18) and creating women (Gen 2:21) God gave Adam more work (Gen 2:19-20).

Work wasn't a detour or a punishment, it was an invitation to carry responsibility.

This book will solve a common problem we all see in teams: A lack of ownership and the subsequent lack of productivity. This is the first ebook I wrote and speaks about the privilege of responsibility. Get it and have your entire team get this FREE eBook.

Mobility is the goal as I get older.

I used to be the guy who could bench press 300 lbs. I could dunk a basketball. I could win nearly every 100 yard dash. I was the small but powerful Flash. But what do those stories get me now? How will 20 year old stories help me raise my kids and build the future?

They won't. They're memories that can inspire and educate but they can't do any actual work for me.

My goal isn't to be fastest and strongest anymore. It's to be even more powerful than that: still here.

My workouts involve a lot of stretching, yoga, and high reps weights. I want to be able to move, lift, run, and still compete with my kids in sports and activities for a long time to come. I don't want creaky joints, naps, and old stories to dominate my days.

Likewise in my coaching and consulting role, I want to remain nimble with my ideas, strategies, and implementation.

My workouts involve a lot of questions and meeting new people. The best thing I do to stay "young" in this area is spending considerable time with, and energy on, younger people. I don't chase big checks from 50+ year old pastors with plateaued ministries. I have extensive experience that proves most of those can no longer be taught anything. I spend time with people who can outrun me. But with whom I can run with because I form from experience equal to their energy from youth. So together we get better.

No matter how small or how slow, moving is what will keep you moving. Mentally, emotionally, physically.

Where have you stopped moving? That's where you'll atrophy and age faster than you realize.
