SwebbMail September 7, 2023 - Is Swebb non-binary?
Oct 07, 2023There are two types of people in the world:
The ones who make "two types of people" statements and the ones who don't overgeneralize everything.
If "non-binary" in the subject line triggered you, you're conditioned towards one way of thinking. I'm sure you're visualizing of someone in California or Austin with a different color hair. And I know why, you're not alone.
But is that ALL that non-binary means?
This email is meant to be little more light hearted but still provoke you to think. Just go with me...
It's good click bait and easy preaching to make as many either/or statements as you can. Or high contrast presentations.
Here are some favorites (and yes, I do it too).
"There are two types of people in the world..."
- Followed by two generic options like "Whataburger lovers and In-and-Out lovers." If it's intentional comedy, great! But when it's a 25 year old life coach followed by an attempt at the profound, nah.
- You can like both burger places and know the truth that Dunkin has the worst donuts on the planet.
"The difference in a good leader and bad leader is..."
- Followed by 2 slightly-different traits that the author himself has in him. But to prove a point, he's throwing out this contrast that isn't a binary either/or. It's easy preaching and good for clicks but don't demonize the "other" option that's not actually bad.
- We all know the good leaders have fewer friends and the great leaders have fewer convictions so they make more friends... just like Jesus.
"You can be for [them] or against [them]."
- In a voting booth or football game, sure. But the hidden third option is "or I could learn from both of them on the sidelines." Now, I'm not saying to not vote (please vote with a brain). And I'm not saying you can't be a hardcore fan even of the Jets. I'm just saying that this is a classic guilt trip headed your direction.
- Of course if you are actually for the Jets then you are against winning... so sometimes it's true.
I love clarity. And there are black and white, binary, good and evil distinctions out there everywhere. It's just funny in today's world - especially the church - how many love to be so vague on actual truth and so binary on crap (yes, crap) that doesn't matter and is a distracting tool of the devil.
My favorite line about this phenomenon was just posted last year...
"Facebook: Where the Bible is ambiguous about such matters as sexual ethics and the sanctity of life,
but is exceptionally clear on student loan forgiveness."
HA! Man, if that doesn't make you laugh and cry at the same time, you're the problem. (see that binary jab I just threw?). :)
Be careful out there. :)
- There are two types of leaders in the world: The ones who get all their gifts from a definitive list in an ebook and those who are bad leaders.
- The difference between a good leader and a great leader is the one who gets this list and reads all the prime numbered options.
